What is a cross rate?

Currency pairs that do not have USD (dollar) within them are called cross rates. For example (EUR/GBP, EUR/CHF, CHF/JPY). In the cryptocurrency market, cross rates are often called those pairs without the dollar and/or Bitcoin – for example (ETH/LTC).
